Policy Updates

  • The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will not extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghans and Cameroonians. Many individuals who are in the U.S. under this status will begin losing their protections as early as May.

  • The Trump administration is continuing to revoke the visas of international students, faculty, and researchers. As many as 300 colleges and universities have identified in total about 770 international students and recent graduates whose visa status has been changed by the Trump administration.

News Updates

  • The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the Trump administration must work to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the U.S. Abrego Garcia is a Salvadoran man with protected status to live and work here. The administration admitted that they had mistakenly deported him to a prison in El Salvador, but had said they had no jurisdiction or plans to have him returned to the country. The ruling also states that the administration must handle his case following proper procedures.

    • However, in a meeting with President Trump on Tuesday, President Bukele of El Salvador stated that he would not return Abrego Garcia to the U.S.

    • On Tuesday night, a federal judge ordered the administration to provide details on what steps it is taking to ensure Abrego Garcia is returned.

    • Additionally, U.S. District Judge Boasburg issued a written ruling stating that the administration could face criminal contempt charges for violating an order halting the deportations of alleged members of a Venezuelan gang without due process.

  • A federal judge temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s order to end humanitarian protections for more than 500,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans.

  • A federal judge ruled that the administration must immediately begin processing and admitting refugees who were conditionally approved before January 20th. However, the administration continues to defy the order. The judge has given them a deadline of April 20 to submit a framework of the steps they are taking to resume refugee processing.
